A pen style vaporizer is the smallest way to vaporize concentrates: a battery, a tiny heating chamber and a mouthpiece in something about the size of a marker. If you are shopping for one, the question that matters most is not the brand, it is what heats your wax. A coil pen heats fast and costs less. A coilless ceramic cup tastes cleaner and is easier to keep clean. Below is what to look for, the two pen style vaporizers we carry and who each one fits, and when a pen is the wrong tool and you should be looking at something bigger.
One note before we start. “Vape pen” gets used for three different things: oil cartridge pens, dry herb pens and concentrate pens. This guide is about concentrate pens (wax, shatter, budder, rosin, live resin), because that is what we sell and what we can speak to honestly.
What makes a good pen style vaporizer
The heating element
This decides flavor, cleanup and running cost more than anything else on the spec sheet. There are two kinds.
Coil pens wrap a heating wire around or inside the chamber. You drop concentrate onto it and it vaporizes quickly. They are usually the cheapest pens to buy, and the coil is a replaceable part you swap when it gets tired.
Coilless cup pens heat a small ceramic cup from the sides, so the concentrate never touches bare wire. That means no coil gunk and cleaner flavor, and you clean it with a Q tip instead of digging residue out of a wrap.
Heat settings
Most pens give you a few preset levels instead of an exact temperature. Three settings is plenty for a pen. Start on the lowest one for flavor and work up until you find your spot between taste and vapor. As the battery drains, going up one setting keeps the hits the same.
Replaceable parts
Every heating element wears out eventually. On a good pen you swap the coil or the heater cup and keep the pen. On a disposable style pen you throw the whole thing away. Before you buy, check that spare coils or cups are sold separately and what they cost.
Battery and size
Pens trade battery for pocket size. The two pens below run 650mAh and 900mAh batteries, built for short sessions and a recharge when you get home. If you want long sessions or water filtration, a pen is not the right shape. See the section on when to skip a pen below.
Pocket friendliness
A pen lives in a pocket, so a cap that keeps lint out of the chamber and a body that does not leak matters more than it sounds.
The pen style vaporizers we carry
Lightning Pen: the coilless cup pen
The Lightning Pen is a stainless steel concentrate pen built around a small side heated ceramic crucible cup with a black porcelain glaze inside. There are no metal coils in the chamber. The cup is about the size of a large Q tip head, so it is built for small, quick sessions.
| Heating | Side heated ceramic crucible cup, no metal coils |
| Battery | 900mAh rechargeable, USB C cable included |
| Heat settings | Three (3 clicks to change) |
| Autofire | 15 seconds (2 clicks); 5 clicks turns it on or off |
| Heater | Replaceable mini heater cup, 10mm x 6mm |
| In the kit | Pen, extra heater, Thunder Cap lint guard, screwdriver, 4 screws, 2 spare o rings, USB C cable |
If a heater ever breaks, you swap the cup and keep the pen.
The kit is about $66, or about $79 with two more heater cups. Spare Lightning Pen heater cups come in two packs, and replacement Thunder Caps are sold on their own. Everything for it is on the Lightning Pen page.
Best for: flavor first dabbers who want something pocketable and are happy loading small amounts.
Coil King AIO: the coil pen with a built in dab tool
The AIO Coil King is an all in one pen style concentrate vaporizer with a kanthal dual clapton coil wrapped around quartz. Pop off the mouthpiece, load with the zirconia ceramic dab tool built into the device, and go.
| Heating | Kanthal dual clapton coil wrapped around quartz |
| Battery | 650mAh with a 10 second auto cutout |
| Heat settings | Three, voltage based |
| Loading | Zirconia ceramic dab tool built into the device |
| Body | Leak free stainless steel |
| Coils | Replaceable, sold in two packs or added to the kit as a three pack |
The pen kit is about $35. Check the product page for which colors are in stock right now.
Best for: a first concentrate pen, a backup pen, or anyone who wants the loading tool on the device so there is nothing extra to carry.
Which pen style vaporizer is right for you
If flavor and easy cleaning matter most, get the Lightning Pen. If price matters most, or you like having the dab tool on the pen, get the Coil King. They also make a good pair: the Lightning Pen for flavor at home, the Coil King as the one you don’t worry about losing.
When a pen is the wrong tool
Pens are made for small loads and short sessions. If you want bigger sessions, exact power control or water filtration, step up a size. Our dab pen vs eRig comparison lays out the trade offs between device types side by side. The best portable dab rig post covers a rebuildable heater on a pocket mod, which keeps most of a pen’s portability but lets you set the exact wattage. If you are ready for a full electronic rig, start with the eRig buyer’s guide.
If you mostly use flower, a concentrate pen is not what you want. Read our guide to the Ruby Twist ball vape instead.
How to get the most out of any pen
Load small. One or two hits at a time, and draw slow. A small chamber splashes when it is overloaded.
Start low. Begin on the lowest heat setting and work up to your spot.
Keep sessions short. On the Lightning Pen that means no more than three 15 second autofire runs, then let it cool down completely.
Q tip after every session. A gentle wipe keeps the cup clean and the flavor right.
Lube the o rings. A little vegetable oil keeps the mouthpiece coming off easily.
Never torch a ceramic heater. Burn off residue with the pen’s own heat instead.

Pen style vaporizer FAQ
What is a pen style vaporizer?
A pen style vaporizer is a slim, battery powered vaporizer about the size and shape of a thick pen. Concentrate versions have a small heating chamber, either a coil or a ceramic cup, under a removable mouthpiece. You load a small amount, press the button and inhale.
Can you put wax in a pen style vaporizer?
Yes, if it is a concentrate pen. Both pens we carry are made for wax, shatter, budder, rosin and other concentrates. Oil cartridge pens and dry herb pens are different devices and will not handle wax.
Is a coil or a coilless pen better?
A coil pen heats quickly and costs less to get into. A coilless ceramic cup pen keeps your concentrate off bare wire, which means no coil gunk, cleaner flavor and easier cleaning. Both use replaceable heating parts.
How do you clean a pen style vaporizer?
Q tip the chamber gently after each session. On the Lightning Pen, a full charge has enough power for a burn off clean: hold the pen upside down and run it in 15 second intervals, letting it cool between them. Never use a torch on a ceramic heater or the metal base.
Can I use a pen style vaporizer for dry herb?
Not these. The Lightning Pen and the Coil King are built for concentrates only. For flower, a ball vape like the Ruby Twist is the better tool.
